Do’s and Dont’s of Grooming an Emotional Support Dog at Home

An emotional support animal is an animal that provides peace and affection to you. These animals play the role of companions for you when you need them. When you decide to get an ESA for yourself you have to be clear that you are signing up for a big responsibility.

It is the right of an ESA to get provided with health care and protection from its owner. For this purpose, you take care of your ESA like a child. Just as a child needs pampering, so does your dog.

It is humanly impossible to take your dog to a vet regularly for his grooming and cleaning so people decide to take care of this thing at home. When you are grooming your ESA at home there are certain things that should be kept in mind. Always remember that you need an esa letter in order to live peacefully with your esa.

Do’s of Grooming an ESA at Home

  1. Regularly groom your ESA - Your furry friend sometimes gets mats and other skin problems that if not noticed in time can result in fatal diseases. Check regularly the skin of your animal. Also, trim off the nails of your dog in order to avoid getting your pet infected.
  2. Be patient - If you are in stress your dog will sense it and react to it. Patiently and attentive do your dog’s work. If your dog is uncomfortable because of your actions, do not do them. Initially, your dog will be uncomfortable when you will be grooming it. The trick is to do it often to make him less uncomfortable. Just be kind and patient to your ESA.
  3. Choose an appropriate space for grooming - Make sure the place you chose to groom your dog should not be dangerous. For example, giving a bath to your dog at a slippery place will hurt you and your dog if you both slipped and fell.
  4. Use appropriate equipment - Do not use dangerous tools and equipment. Know your animal’s skin type and choose equipment accordingly.
  5. More hair more maintenance - if your dog is double or triple coated breed, it will need more brushing and maintenance. These breeds often get tight knots if not brushed regularly.

Dont’s of Grooming an ESA at Home

  1. Don’t rush - If you don’t have time don’t groom your esa dog. If you will be in a rush, chances are that you will mess up the grooming process. Not only this your hastiness will result in mistakes that can be life-threatening.
  2. Do not grip his fur - when grooming, do not control or grip your dog with his fur.
  3. Use dog shampoo - It is important to keep in mind that using the shampoo that you use for yourself on your dog can be really dangerous. Know your dog’s skin type and get a proper dog shampoo.
  4. Don’t give often showers: Bathing your dog often can be dangerous for its health. Consult a vet to know how often should your dog be given a bathe. Also, keep in mind that in extremely cold weather, do not bathe your dog.
  5. Do not do too much - Doing a lot can be overwhelming for your dog. Divide the session of your dog’s grooming into short sections and be calm and soft while doing it.
  6. Do not cut short the nails - Make sure to not cut the nails of your ESA too deep. It can cause infections.

If you are intimidated by keeping an ESA because of your unstable mental health, get your self evaluated whether you qualify for an ESA or not. Check the esa letter sample online to see if you can get an ESA or not.
